Packing list · 6 items

Six surprises that eat your margin.

Every one of these has cost a first-time importer money. None of them is on the supplier’s quote.

  1. C/NO. 1/6

    The rate isn’t the rate

Your bank or PayPal adds 2–4% on top of the market rate. On a US$ 5,000 order that is up to US$ 200 you never see on the invoice.

    → CH 06
  2. C/NO. 2/6

    MOQ moves the price

1,000 pieces at US$ 2.10 or 500 at US$ 2.45. The smaller order costs more per unit, and that is normal. Know where the price breaks are.

    → CH 03
  3. C/NO. 3/6

    The sample isn’t the batch

The sample was made by hand for you. Without written specs and an inspection, you find out what mass production looks like when the cartons arrive.

    → CH 04 · 09
  4. C/NO. 4/6

    FOB isn’t your door

A US$ 2.45 FOB price stops at the ship in Ningbo. Freight, insurance, port fees and the truck to your warehouse are still ahead.

    → CH 07
  5. C/NO. 5/6

    Customs wants its share

Duty depends on the HS code and your country, and you pay it on arrival, before you can sell a single unit.

    → CH 08
  6. C/NO. 6/6

    The new bank account

“Our company account changed, please pay to the new one.” It is the classic fraud. Once a wire is sent, it rarely comes back.

    → CH 05

From US$ 2.45
to US$ 3.62.

The supplier quotes US$ 2.45 a unit. What lands at your door costs 48% more. Here is every line, so the difference never surprises you.

Paying the supplier

Most factories ask for 30% before production and 70% before the goods ship. That split is normal. What is not normal is a change of bank details by email or chat.

Stop and call.

If the account holder’s name is not the company on your PI, do not pay.
